Bloomberg: Gay Marriage Would Pass Senate With Room to Spare - By Ken Lovett – June 16, 2011 – NYDailyNews.com

Mayor Bloomberg this morning said he believes if a gay marriage bill reaches the floor of the Senate it would pass by more than just the "bare majority."

Bloomberg traveled to the Capitol this morning to make a last ditch plea to Senate Republicans to let the bill come to the floor. He met behind closed doors with the senators. Photo

He later told reporters he was given no specific indication today of what the Senate will do.

"But when you talk to them and you listen to their questions and you try to discuss the issues with them, I think in the end, if this bill comes to the floor, and I expect it to do so, it will pass and it will have more than just the bare majority necessary to pass it."

The mayor is one of the Senate GOP's biggest backers and said he believes there would be enough backing for senators if the Conservative Party followed through on its threat to strip its backing of anyone who supports gay marriage.

"I was asked what I thought would happen, and I think it would be a real positive thing," he said, noting he has gotten support for his stance from young and old.

He cited the "real courage" of Sens. James Alesi (R-Rochester) and Roy McDonald (R-Saratoga Springs), who this week become the first GOP-ers to come out in favor of gay marriage...
